Why is Professional FM training important for my organisation?

Managing a diverse FM team

Organizations, particularly those with an international presence can find creating, managing and demonstrating a competent workforce to customers can be challenging.  You may or may not have an organisational Competence Framework and it may or may not be focused on the professional needs of the staff that work in the organisation; technicians, engineers, administrators, IT staff, FM staff.  Organizations whose main role is to deliver FM services to customers have a particular challenge.

Geography and language can often work against a harmonious approach to developing staff.  FM is developing in many countries across EMEA and the practitioners use many languages to communicate.  Often the line management structure is dominated by a single business language caused by the organizations heritage.

An integrated approach

Organizations and individuals need to be able to develop and maintain organizational and personal Competence that;

  • Reduces Language and Location barriers to learning
  • Uses consistent and professional global standard that is performance referenced
  • Provides learning opportunities that are flexible and modular
  • Enables globally recognized Professional Qualifications to be achieved
  • Links into a global, regional and local support network
  • Has support from a global professional FM professional membership association
  • Operates a quality controlled system to ensure continual learning improvement
  • Enables sharing of experiences between learners and organizations
  • Focuses on organizational and personal learning, not just examination
  • Supports the view that performance proves Competence

An integrated, organisation wide, systematic approach to Professional FM training enables you to have a consistent approach to the more complex aspects of developing Competence against professional standards across all languages, cultures, globally.

Proactive competence management

To ensure that staff can carry out their roles effectively and perform well organisations need to proactively manage Competence.  The practice of recruiting the person into a job and letting them get on with it, even with a line manager to spot errors, is a practice from the industrial age.  Building confidence, Competence and continually pushing performance requires an organized approach to development and performance.  Organisations and individuals need to plan Competence ahead and continually prepare for performance, not to rely on errors indicating areas for development.

Learning opportunities exist and more are becoming available in most developed countries through academic establishments, and a huge number of learning opportunities are available in every major city in all aspects of management, including that relating to the physical workplace.  In Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa these learning opportunities continue to present themselves as FM matures.

Organizations need to have a consistent approach to the more complex aspects of developing Competence against professional standards, overcoming the barriers of languages and distance. CFL will help our customers achieve this in EMEA; Proactive, professional, consistent FM competence development

Why is professional FM training important for me?

Competence in a job is important - It enables you to perform at an appropriate level.  Your employer’s confidence in appointing you to do a job is just the starting point and you will continue to learn in whatever roles you undertake.  Your rewards depend on your competence.  However, competence is a balance of the three key areas; Experience, Attitude and Skills/ Knowledge.

Professionals such as lawyers, doctors or engineers are not asked to start doing their jobs without a broad knowledge of their subject!  When they do start they have professional sponsors to mentor them too.  For you to perform in your job you need a balance of competence too, and you need to keep pushing the search for knowledge into your development.  Unfortunately, “you do not know what you do not know” and “ignorance is bliss” – until your lack of competence causes you problems.  Learning is important throughout your career and essential in the first 10 years of your FM job.

The legacy of FM is that it has not been the first choice career for most of its practitioners, and learning how to perform an FM job has been a matter of experience – trial and error.  In the past 25 years experienced managers, engineers, administrators, surveyors, builders, project managers and designers have used their skills to good advantage in FM roles.  These professionals have shared their skills and as a result the professional standards of FM are now more clearly defined.  Professional, academic and trade organizations have created communities of practice and sharing of experience is widespread in the developed world.

CFL training gives you essential knowledge to ensure that you have this broad base of learning to undertake your FM job competently.  In addition the IFMA accredited training is recognized internationally and gives you additional networking and knowledge sharing opportunities.

Perhaps the question should be “What training do I need to perform at my full potential?”

Does my job involve FM?

Many people are involved in providing the management and supervision of an FM service involving buildings and associated services.  The way that their organisation describes their department and roles has a wide variety of titles; Facilities, Estates, Workplace, Services, Office, Administration and General Services.  Job titles include manager, supervisor, controller, consultant, engineer and administrator and a wide range of others.  They can all be considered as FM related.

All the people employed in FM related roles need associated competencies in order to perform effectively.  Exactly what these competencies need to be depends on the way the organization sees its own strategy for employing competent and focused staff and the persons exact role.  It is however very common to find that the role involves a blend of administrative, technical, practical, managerial and supervisory elements.
