Developing competent, Professional Facilities Managers and FM organizations

What is Competence in relation to FM?

Definition

Competence is an ability to do something (to perform) to an acceptable level. It is possible to reference the standard of the performance against criteria that are defined.  Boyatsis, in talking of managerial competencies defines a competency as:    'an underlying characteristic of a person which results in effective and/or superior performance in a job' (Boyatsis l982, p. 21)

 Competence can be referenced and measured in its component parts;

  • Experience
  • Skills/ Knowledge
  • Attitude

 Inadequate performance or inability to do something is called ‘incompetence’ and is a result of low competence in one or more of the three areas.

Competence Frameworks

organizations define the competencies they need to achieve their Vision and Objectives.  Management skills, sales, operations and product development are typically the focus for competence development. Often the specific competencies needed to carry out internal function roles are not built into the framework. It is assumed that management skills will cover a broad range of development needs.  Faclities Management is typically in that category.

Even organizations that have FM service delivery as a core business may not clearly define the competencies required to undertake the roles of their staff and rely on the skills they bring when recruited into the role.

If you would like to develop a competence framework that is related to FM please contact us and we would be delighted to offer our advice.

Benefits

How does CFL’s approach benefit me as a Manager?

If you are in the first 10 years of your career as a Facilities Manager, learning the knowledge covered in the IFMA competence framework and obtaining an internationally recognized professional qualification in FM will benefit you, your customers and your team.  The FMP and CFM qualification will support you in demonstrating your commitment to being knowledgeable, productive and effective in your work to your employer.

The IFMA FMP and CFM enable you to clearly see and be able to demonstrate FM professional competence as different from the generic competencies of your organization.  This helps your organization understand that your professional development is important and different from that required for organization operations, IT, marketing and other staff.  Without appropriate structured competence development there will be areas of your job that you don’t know what you do not know – and the investment your organization makes in employing you will not be fully utilized.

You commitment to developing professional competence can be enacted through CFL.  You can use this web site to explain the benefits of being competent and the risks to the organization of not investing in you.
